[COLLAGE] FRANCISCO BALAGTAS THE "PRINCE OF TAGALOG POETS"

           Francisco Balagtas was born on April 2, 1788 in Bigaa, Bulacan later on named after him in 1966. He was acclaimed as “Prince of Tagalog Poets”. “Florante at Laura” is his most notable and famous work which is said to be inspired by the story of his life and lost love. Also, he wrote “Florante at Laura” while he was in prison and after he was released in prison in 1838, he published “Florante at Laura”. In 1840, he moved to Balanga, Bataan and worked as a civil servant – a court translator. He married Juana Tiambeng on July 22, 1842 and had 11 children with her. Balagtas died on February 20, 1862. The term “Balagtasan” which is the extemporaneous debate done in verse form and spoken in Filipino was named after him. – Mae Anne T. Fajardo
